Maybe we have changed as well in this world of portability. When I was younger, nothing would have stopped my from buying a book, not even that I would have to lug it home again on an airplane (then again, in those days it didn't cost $25 to check a bag). I love bookstores, but used bookstores in particular. The smells, the memories bound up in each book... it feels so tranquil. It's a place of discovery. I went to a used bookstore near my current house and I have never felt so unwelcome in my life. In spite of the "browsers welcome" sign outside, they watched me the entire time - I was the only person in there (I wonder why). Apparently they stock a lot of collectors items, but still you never know who would buy from you. They gave me the evil eye and I will never go back! I will however, go to the independent bookstore up the street that, while not used books, is calm and welcoming and holds book signing events every week.

I completely support the DC license plates reading "Taxation without representation." DC residents need to have a voice. I also found that DC Vote Voice stat surprising, though maybe not shocking. I mean, it seems bizarre that DC residents WOULDN'T enjoy the same voting rights as the rest of Americans and I think that's what that stat reflects.

Layla, thank you for your comment, and I think you raise an interesting idea about the differences between a big city and a smaller city or town. Having spent most of my life in medium-big cities, I think it's really easy to feel like you get lost in the crowd, but there are also times when it seems like I recognize the people waiting on my subway platform or walking to work at the same time as me. I assume that you're in a smaller metro area, other than the woman in the cafeteria, and being considered a regular, what are some of the other ways that you find community in your home? Thanks again for commenting!

Hey, I just discovered your blog through browsing through comments on MWFseekingBFF's blog.

I always buy a cookie at the cafeteria at work. Once I didn't have any change with me and the girl who works there said "that's ok, you can just bring in the money tomorrow. You're my cookie girl."

I think you've definitely touched on the reason it's nice to be a regular customer. I think that's why I could never live in a big city: I want to know my neighbours
