Don’t fear if you hear a foreign sound in your ear

Day one of NaNoBloMo, and I am already beset with some sort of issue which is preventing me from even accessing my site from work. Frustration abounds.
I heard a great report on NPR this morning, about how the Jewish Federation of New Orleans has developed an incentive program to encourage Jewish people to move to the Big Easy. Maybe it was because I was still half asleep, but this seems like a lovely idea to me. I must be honest, I owe my love affair with the idea of New Orleans to an Anne Rice novel, but seriously, how could you not be in intrigued by a city so lovingly depicted?
Unfortunately I never got to visit the city before the floods destroyed so much of it. But that makes me even more excited by the idea of being a part of the rebuilding. I love the idea of getting a small house and fixing it up, of working on weekend projects like building new housing for people. I love the idea of working with my hands and creating something of my very own. And I could have an awesome garden in that southern soil.
I do feel torn though. I am finally beginning to feel at home in DC. I have made solid connections, become involved with organizations and am working to find work in a field that I will truly enjoy (anyone looking for an online communications coordinator?) Many of my friends are here, and I would hate to move away and have to start over once again from scratch.
I’ve been reading a blog recently about how to live a simpler life and be more productive. One of the key points that the author of the blog makes is that you should develop a step by step plan for how to get from the idea to the reality of what you want, rather than jumping into it feet first. I tend to commit myself to an idea before I know the steps involved in getting myself there, which I think often leads to a fair bit of stress in the middle of accomplishing whatever I have set out to do (ie quitting my job in Denver and giving up my apartment before I knew for sure that I had a place to live and a job in DC… it worked out in the end, but it was pretty nuts for a week there).
